The golden retriever and geese, the Chiweenie and the tortoise, the cheetah and the Labrador—all of these animals have formed unusual friendships in nature. However, Ava the Rottweiler and Blue the emu, who we dearly adore on TikTok, have become our new favorite duo.
When baby Blue was brought home by their owner, Jennifer Walters, co-founder of Gold Colt Rescue in Texas, they became friends. When he was born, he required a new home because he had been purchased on eBay as an egg. Walters took the baby emu in and intended to raise him indoors until he was large enough to go outside with the other farm animals.

Did Walters worry that introducing her puppy to a young emu may pose a danger? Not at all, however, she did introduce them with caution of course. She tells Daily Paws that Ava is without a doubt the kindest, most loving animal that exists. Who doesn’t adore babies—any kind of baby? Walters eventually caved into Ava’s grousing and let her meet the emu after first keeping the two apart but able to view one another. Naturally, she was not shocked to see Ava lick Blue “from head to toe.”
Walters chuckles, “She immediately adopted that bird. “Ava developed an obsession for him.” Mutual feelings existed. Blue seems to have imprinted on Ava, which would suggest that for a moment Blue may have mistakenly believed he was a dog, and the rest is history.

They enjoy going on strolls and taking naps together, but their favorite hobbies usually entail rushing about the yard, with Blue chasing Ava at every chance. Our favorite Blue and Ava pastime to watch is when Blue gets the zoomies out of excitement on TikTok, where the duo has amassed millions of views. When an emu runs around wildly, it’s equally as adorable and entertaining as when a dog does it!
The two aren’t together as often now that Blue is a little older—at age 2, he stands approximately 6 feet tall with what Walters refers to as “velociraptor feet.” They nevertheless spend as much time as they can together outside because of their unshakable friendship.
What will happen to Blue and Ava next? Walters does intend to continue chronicling their exploits, both on TikTok and in the form of a children’s book, which will showcase the two’s passionate and rambunctious friendship. However, it won’t be on the big screen just yet. The first in line will be us!
