Thousands of beagles have recently been saved from a life of suffering and sadness when the Virginia breeding facility where they were being housed was ordered to close. They have been seeking new homes thanks to the Humane Society. Sami is one of the canines who has been receiving a new beginning. She had lived her entire existence being denied even the most fundamental puppy pleasures, just like all the other dogs who had been saved.
But today, everything is different. Sami was taken in as a foster dog last Thursday by Karen Shrader and her family, who volunteered to open their home to her. Sami’s lack of familiarity with kindness and the idea that the world isn’t necessarily dangerous was evident right away. Shrader told The Dodo, “The first day she was quite shy, but she claimed a dog bed in our family room. She wouldn’t leave the bed for more than a few feet.
Sami soon found the backyard’s lush grass, though. She made her first-ever contact with grass there. By Saturday, Shrader claimed, “she was doing zoomies and chasing balls.” Sami was overjoyed. She’d been losing out on so much joy in the breeding facility. She now has everything. Sami has transformed from a melancholy, timid dog into a joyful, energetic puppy in just a few days. It has been a great delight for Shrader to see her foster dog thrive.
“It makes my heart happy to know she has left a situation where she was unable to be a dog and is now free to run, play, and experience a human’s tender touch!” stated Shrader. “She’s been loved by my family, and she makes us so happy!”
Shrader hopes that Sami’s tale will encourage more people to consider adopting one of these beagles or to support the Humane Society by donating. Being foster parents to Sami ultimately didn’t go as planned for Shrader and her family, though. “She has gained our love. She is our new pet!” stated Shrader. “Yes, I failed at foster care!”
