Vancouver Police Dogs Enjoy Some Time Off To Make Their Yearly Calendar For Charity

Posted on June 3, 2022 by TrueNews

Vancouver’s police dogs are hard at work keeping the city safe, whether they’re on patrol or sniffing out contraband. They also volunteer once a year to aid a good cause while having a nice time.

The Vancouver Police Department Foundation produces a calendar showcasing the Vancouver Police Dogs in action every year, with sales going to charity.  The Vancouver Police Dogs and their handlers were featured in last year’s calendar in and around the Canadian city.

The Canine Unit of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) comprises 16 handler/dog teams. They work seven days a week, 24 hours a day. It’s no surprise that they need a break now and then.  A collection of brilliant, inventive photographers captured Vancouver Police Dogs resting and enjoying popular activities in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, for this year’s 2020 Calendar.

The funny photographs depict the dogs indulging in a variety of popular outdoor activities popular in Vancouver. The activities are a far cry from the work the canines undertake regularly, which includes criminal apprehension, drug detection, and the detection of firearms and explosives.

“The fact that police dogs have to deal with harsh situations was the inspiration for this year’s calendar.” We wanted to show them doing wild things like mountain climbing and skating and otherwise unwinding on their days off,” Andrea Wright, Executive Director of The Vancouver Police Foundation, told Reshareworthy.com.

That meant time outside for the dogs. “Most of the photos were taken outside, not in the studio,” Wright explains. “In some situations, the dogs were attached to the equipment, while in others, they were photographed in place and then composited into the scene in post.” “We are extremely appreciative to our brilliant photographers who volunteered their time for this project,” Wright continued.

The dogs and their handlers are extremely busy, with over 10,000 service calls per year. For many years, the annual calendars have also served the community. The calendars have raised $450,000 for charity since 2010. The BC Cancer Foundation and the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation will benefit from this year’s revenues.

In honor of his wife Candy, a VPD officer who died of breast cancer, retired VPD Sergeant Mike Anfield formed the Candy Anfield Memorial Foundation which funds and produces the calendar. The 2022 Vancouver Police Dog Calendar is now available and may be purchased online at the Vancouver Police Foundation website from anywhere in the world.
