Derek Plante, Bonzo’s father, lives in Rhode Island. Bonzo discovered what would become one of his favorite playthings — a 30-pound dumbbell — while Plante was lifting weights one day a few years ago.
Yesenia Rego, Plante’s niece, had always known about Bonzo’s strange toy choices. But she got to experience it personally just the other day at her uncle’s house at a get-together.
When Bonzo arrived at the party, he brought the dumbbell with him, displaying his strength for all to witness. Rego told The Dodo, “I suppose the best way to characterize him is a meathead.'” “He’s been called ‘the most jacked dog I’ve ever seen,’ according to others.”
But, hey, that’s just Bonzo for you. Fortunately, Bonzo appears to carry the dumbbell in such a way that he does not injure himself. “He holds it on his gums in between his front and rear teeth, just behind his front teeth,” Rego added. “He’s been doing this regularly for years.”
Plante claims that he generally meets Bonzo’s craving for something heavy by giving him heavy chew toys and that he only uses the dumbbell when he has visitors. Nobody knows why this is the case, but Rego has a theory. “I guess he feels the need to brag,” she speculated.
