It can be very challenging for us to be apart from our animals’ companions for extended periods. It can be even more challenging for our dogs because they are unable to comprehend where we are or whether or not we will return.

Cassandra Cabrera, an Army soldier, has reported that her last ten months of deployment in Africa had been among the most challenging of her career. Her cherished dog, Miss May, was already there to greet her when she returned, but Cabrera was worried that she wouldn’t recognize her because the dog was still a young pup when Cabrera departed for her deployment.

However, her concerns were swiftly put to rest when she found Miss May waiting for her at the Sacramento International Airport in the state of California. In a split second, Miss May demonstrated that she had not forgotten about her human.

While Cabrera rode the escalator down, a mob of people surrounding Miss May, who was attached to a leash, stood there. When Miss May saw Cabrera coming down the stairs, she bolted straight toward her and doused her with licks and tail wags as soon as she got within a few feet of her. It’s safe to assume that Miss May not only recognized her human but also didn’t lose any memory of her for even an instant.

We are extremely fortunate that their joyful get-together was documented so that everyone can see it afterward. Cabrera will never forget the warm and fuzzy feeling he got at this moment. We can only hope that this won’t be the case the next time these two are forced to spend so much time apart!
