There is no human mayor in Idyllwild, California, because it is a non-incorporated town. They do, however, have a furry mayor, a Golden Retriever named Max II, formerly known as Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller II, who has stepped up to the plate. After Max I prepared the way, Max II was elected mayor.

Max I was voted to the position of President in a June 2012 election sponsored by Animal Rescue Friends. People were able to vote by donating $1 to the rescue, and the election raised $31,000 in total.
He was elected to a one-year term on July 1, 2012, after beating out 13 other dogs and two cats. His term was then extended to 2014, however Mayor Max passed away in April 2013.
Max II then took over for the remainder of Max I’s term. It was much more meaningful and an honour because he is a cousin of Max I. When the term ended, ARF held a new election, and Mayor Max II was re-elected to continue serving his community. He is still the mayor of the city to this day.

Max II’s job as mayor is to represent the Idyllwild community in a positive light. His responsibilities include assisting commissioners with their projects, attending community events such as outdoor concerts, festivals, fairs, and parades, making every effort to attend official visits such as ribbon cuttings, and speaking out on behalf of Idyllwild’s animals, both domesticated and non-domesticated.
