In fact, living in a war-torn country far from home is both frightening and isolating. A new best friend made one soldier’s days more bearable. The soldier’s heart broke when he had to leave his best friend behind one day. Ken Wyrsch came upon a stray puppy near an Iraqi army installation. The puppy, whose he named Ollie, provided Ken with the much-needed comfort almost immediately. Others on the base who met Ollie fell in love with him as well. He was an excellent addition to the dedicated team. When the soldiers were on missions, Ollie would stay on base and wait for their return.
Coming “home” to his wagging tail and hairy cuddles reminded the soldiers that there is a world and an existence outside of the vacuum they were in. Ken then received some distressing news. The army base was being decommissioned. While being transported back to California was a comfort, the base’s shutdown meant Ollie would be back on the streets. Ollie couldn’t just hop on an aircraft and fly home with Ken because of strict customs regulations. Ollie would be on his own in a place that didn’t care about his sweetness, affection, or loyalty.
In reality, he would end up in a critical situation once again. As a result, Ken reached out to SPCA International to see what he could do. Ken and Ollie were reunited one month later. Their reunion is simply so touching! “You don’t leave a friend behind,” Ken stated. That is correct! In the following video, you can see their touching story and reunion.
